Bute is the perfect wedding island. The romance of journeying to a Scottish island to tie the knot cannot be beaten. Even Stella McCartney did it in 2003!
Here are 4 great venues on the island for a wedding ceremony.
1. Mount Stuart House
The cream of the crop! If you have a largish budget, the seat of the Marquess of Bute is a fantastic location to get hitched. The house was built over 110 years ago and no expense was spared – the Marquess of Bute was probably the richest man in the world at the time. The marble chapel is a beautifully rendered gothic space in white marble – the fantastic light bounces around the shimmering walls and even on dull days the effect is uplifting. After the ceremony move next door to the Marble Hall (more marble!) and feast and dance the night away.
Mount Stuart recently received highly commended status in the 2011 Hudsons Heritage Awards. For more info CLICK HERE

2. Rothesay Castle
The castle in Rothesay is unique in Scotland for it’s multi-turreted design – although various invaders over the centuries have knocked these down. However the Great Hall is intact and is a very atmospheric venue for a wedding. From the hall steps lead down to the inner courtyard and many a bride has wowed the assembled guests as she descends to meet and greet. A piper on the bridge of the moat is a nice touch too!

3.The Victoria Hotel
The Victoria Hotel is a useful and rather smart venue for a wedding. Have a civil ceremony in the smaller function room overlooking the Rothesay esplanade and then the after party/reception can be in the larger function room which also looks over the putting greens and esplanade. Your photographer can even take you down to the gardens opposite and snap some photos for the album..

4. A beach
Now of course this would be weather permitting however, Kerrycroy, Ettrick Bay and Kilchattan Bay all have good access plus St Ninians Bay has the smallish village hall close by for weddings of up to 70 people or so. I could stick my neck out and suggest that May and June are probably the best months for decent weather but this is the west coast of Scotland – anything could happen!
