Donald Campbell killed instantly whilst attempting to break his own water-speed record of 276mph. His craft ‘Bluebird’ flipped into the air at around 300mph. His body has now been recovered.
4th January 1967.

On Friday evening, the pier will be the place to be at 6.20pm as Donald Campbell’s Bluebird rolls off the Calmac ferry and on to Bute.

With interest from The One Show and BBC Reporting Scotland, we are hoping that lots of locals (and visitors!) are there to welcome this iconic vessel ashore.  The Pipe Band will also be in attendance to pipe her onto the Prom where Bill Smith and his team will be stopping for interviews and photographs!

This dedicated band have spent years restoring the blue hydroplane to its former glory and have brought her to Bute’s Loch Fad for crew-training.

From Monday until the 16th of August, you can pop up to Loch Fad to see how training is progressing!

We’ve got the #bluebirdonbute twitter feed on the www.visitbute.com home page for you to watch and a dedicated page of videos and pix,
