Bute Community Forest
Bute Community Forest is found to the north end of Bute, near to the Colintraive/Rhubodach ferry terminal. Hosting many outdoor activities for families and children, the forest is a must-do. In 2009, 93% of 2739 people (52% of the eligible population) voted in favour of purchasing the forest at the north end of the island and created a record for the largest community-vote! They felt strongly that the forest should be managed environmentally, with clear felling avoided if possible, new jobs created and better recreational facilities developed for local people and to attract new visitors to the island.
Bute Museum
Situated behind Rothesay Castle, Bute Museum contains a treasure trove of the island's history, archeology and natural history. You will easily spend an afternoon immersed in the extensive displays from every period of Bute's past. Children can enjoy handling various natural objects on set out on the Touch Table. The Museum also offers a small but well stocked souvenir shop.
Discovery Centre
Housed in Rothesay's famous 1924 Winter Gardens, originally a circular event space now is home to Bute's Tourist Centre and 90 seater state-of-the-art cinema. Tourist Information staff also offer a comprehensive and friendly service who will keep you right before you set out on your own exploration of the island.
Mount Stuart
The Georgian architecture of the wings presents a striking contrast to the otherwise Victorian design, providing a completely unique architectural blend. Taking a moment to absorb the sheer beauty of the building is an unforgettable part of the Mount Stuart experience. Once inside, you'll experience the singular vision of an wealthy ancestral owner and his favoured architect, William Burges. Inside, design inspired by astrology, art and mythology dazzles. See a map of the stars on the ceiling of the Marble Hall. This house is filled with innovations – from an early telephone system, and indoor pool to a Victorian passenger lift.
Rothesay Castle
This magnificent castle, set on an area of no immediately obvious defensive potential is walking distance from the town's ferry terminal, surrounded by a well kept moat. The grandiose great hall in the gatehouse was restored by the Marquess of Bute in 1900 and now contains informative interpretive display which illuminate the history of the castle and its inhabitants. The 15th century St Michael’s Chapel in the courtyard is another of the castle’s impressive surviving features.
St Blane's Chapel
St Blane’s Church has its roots in a monastery founded here in the AD 500s. This was the home of St Blane – ‘fair Blaan of Ceen Garad (Kingarth)’ – who may have been buried here on his death. The structures on this site belong to two eras: that early Christian monastery, abandoned during Viking raids around AD 790, and a later parish church, built in the 1100s and in use until the Protestant Reformation of 1560.
The Victorian Toilets
These restored 19th-century gentlemens' toilets are a testament to Victorian design, utilising marble furnishings, copper piping, exquisite tilework and a mosaic floor. The male toilets were built in 1899. Only the cisterns in the toilet cubicles are not original; every other part of the fittings is exactly as supplied by the Twyford Company of Glasgow. The toilets are the most impressive public conveniences in Britain and are B-listed for their heritage value.
